Tour of the Baha'i Temple
At 3 p.m. we will meet Nura, our tour guide, in the Visitors Center. The tour will last up to 90 minutes and the topics covered will be the temple and background on the Baha'i faith.
Note: No photography is allowed inside the temple.
Potluck Dinner
Around 4:30 we will make our way to Gillson Park for the potluck.
We will post further info on the potluck/picnic situation as the event gets closer, including where in the park to meet.
Please follow our potluck rules: http://www.chicagoveg.org/pages/Potluck_Rules/
Facts
The Baha'i temple is 15 miles north of downtown Chicago with an estimated driving time from downtown of 35 minutes, depending on traffic.
The Purple Line only runs from Howard to Linden on Sundays.
The park is a short walk from the temple, to give you an idea of the distance between the two locations. However, the picnic area in the park is about 700 meters (.43 miles or 3.5 blocks) walking distance from the corner of Linden and Sheridan, which is where the temple is located.
Sunset will be at 7:05.

Once you know what you are bringing (if you are coming to the potluck portion of the event), please state so when you RSVP. Or if you already have already done your RSVP, click on the "Change your mind about attending?" link, and then you can add or change whatever comments appear by your name.
If you are just attending the tour or just attending the potluck dinner, please specify that in your RSVP.
Those with cars who would be willing to take passengers can self-identify and list their rules/pickup point availability. And those who need rides, should state so in the "Talk about this Meetup" area at the bottom of the page. Keep in mind that posting there sends an email to everyone who has RSVP-ed, so if a direct messege to someone would work just as well, that is the thing to do.
Getting an official picnic area (with picnic tables) at the park appears very likely. But if you live in Wilmette or know someone who does, you can help out by making a reservation for us (please contact Reid). Alternately, we will have a potluck without picnic tables.
The tour will be a go, rain or shine. And for the potluck, there is a sheltered picnic area that may be available and, if so, could be used if it rains.
Please park in the temple parking lot for the tour. And take your car with you to the potluck.
The event organizer, and drivers other who may volunteer, will use their cars to store the potluck food that those arriving via public transportation bring so that we don't bring food into the temple.

I will need a ride from the city. Anybody?
Im driving from Schiller Park (east of ohare) at des plaines river road and lawrence, i have room in my car for a few other people if you need a ride.
Siri, if I have gas in my tank, then I can drive from my place in E Rogers Park. Wilmette isn't too far from here.
Regina, would you be able to give me a lift as well? I'm in Lincoln Square, so I'm not that far from you.
hey all,,,after conferring with my roommate robert, we have decided to ride the red line to Howard stop and board the purple line to Linden in Wilmette. From there, it would be a couple blocks walk to the temple. Anyone that would care to join us, we are a few blocks from Morse red line stop...on Sheridan Road
@Regina-That is a good way to get there from the red line. I may do that myself (instead of driving).
Regina: I will ride the purple line with you. I am coming from the loop. Please advise on a good time to meet up no pun inttended
I have updated the event information in light of some people taking public transportation. This includes a map that shows both the picnic areas and the temple. The walking distance between them is about 4 blocks. If walking those 4 blocks in 15 min. is a burden for you, I can take 3-4 people in my car. Also I, and other drivers who may volunteer, will store the potluck food that those arriving via public transit bring so we don't bring food into the temple. Please park in temple parking lot.
Actually...that is only 26-ish miles round trip for me...weather permitting, I may ride my bike there...in which case I'll probably forgo the potluck part of the festivities as anything I bring would be smashed, pulverized, or starting to ferment after 13 miles in my backpack.
I'll ride the purple line too. Regina, give us a time and place to meet.
Reid, thanks for the idea of storing the food in cars while we go inside the temple. I would like that.
Siri (and anybody else that would like to ride the red line/purple line trains with us: Here is the final scoop on travel plans. We will be on Morse Red Line platform at 2:00pm-2:15pm to catch a train going to Howard. From there, we will be able to catch the Purple line to Linden stop in Wilmette, and walk just a few blocks. We will wait at Morse Red line platform until 2:15 for fellow travelers. Hope to catch some of you there.
Regina, I will meet you at the Morse L Line between 2 and 2 fifteen
dig that picture Shimon!...Anyone that is meeting up with us train riders, the plan is stil on to meet up Sunday 2-2:15pm at Morse Red Line Platform. Looking forward!
Looks like we will have great weather: high of 80 F (26 C) and clear! You will see the entrance of the Visitor Center as you climb the stairs toward the main door of the temple. Vadim will be unable to bring his cooler with ice, but we will still provide drinking water.
anyone going from near Arlington Heights/schaumburg area....please let me know....last minute have a issue with the car...call me my number is 2692677268
As event organizer, I will state that my expectations of the tour included a talk in the temple itself and on the grounds, so I share your disappointment in that area. I was also shocked to see that the parking lot that was adjacent to the temple is under construction. Ouch! That parking lot holds 50 cars. I had posted a link to a map of the park and picnic area in the event description, but no one printed it out. Tell me why by email. I was very happy I could share the area with everyone!
It was a lovely day, yummy food. My friends and I enjoyed ourselves.
Gina G.
again, a wonderful idea, location, and I enjoyed everyone's company. Thank you!
Somebody left a jug at the potluck. I'm holding on to it, please get in touch with me to retrieve it.
