ChicagoVeg Outreach kick-off meeting

Join us for the official ChicagoVeg Outreach kick-off meeting!

The mission of the ChicagoVeg Outreach program is to enable members make a positive difference by educating others that we can all live happy and healthy lives without consuming meat. We know there are numerous benefits of plant-based diet: health benefits, ethical reasons, and ecological advantages. ChicagoVeg Outreach will provide the opportunity for members to turn their knowledge and compassion into actively educating the public.

Three factors that make the ChicagoVeg Outreach different:
1. ChicagoVeg supports a non-judgmental environment where everybody is welcome to join in the outreach meetups regardless of their diet, lifestyle, or philosophy.
2. The focus of the outreach meetups will be on what we support, not what we are against.
3. Our outreach meetups will be focused on delivering our message and having an additional social/fun time for the participants.

Please join us to listen, discuss, exchange ideas, and make suggestions. Free vegan snacks will be provided! Free vegan chocolate samples will be provided by Chocolate Inspirations!

A special presentation will also be given by Wayne Hsiung. Wayne has a BA, MA, and JD from the University of Chicago. Wayne is now a full-time writer and animal rights activist. While the speaker will mostly focus on ethical reasons for vegetarianism, ChicagoVeg Outreach embraces everyone who is interested in promoting veg*nism from all possible perspectives (i.e. Environmental, Health, etc.)

Please use "Talk about this Meetup" area in the bottom of the event page to offer/ask rides and post any questions or comments.

Royal Thai is right across the street from Sulzer and I'll be dreaming of their crispy pad thai noodles for the next month! Anyone care to join me for lunch around noon?

This was a great meeting, thanks for organizing Mali. I am looking forward to help spread awareness on factory farming. I think we need to tread with caution though on how to present such graphic material to a wide audience. I know some of you feel that we should forewarn our audience on the sensistive nature of our material, but I am not sure if that's the way to go. I think it certainly deserves more discussion. I feel that if you give the audience a choice, the vast majority will choose to walk away and remain blinded by the hypocrisy of how their food gets to the table than open their eyes to the truth and go through the inconvenience of motivating themselves to make a lifestyle change.

First meetings can be a little discombobulated. It was great to see a large diverse crowd turn out, and it was smart to have Uptons and chocolatier there to provide samples. I mentioned this at the meeting though: before screening "sensitive/graphic" material to an audience, they should be forewarned about this...yes, it is truth, but people are animals and some were visibly shaken and therefore left the meeting room. What I am saying is that yes we have a responsibility to help others become aware of the behind the scenes savageness, but we should do this bearing in mind the sensitivities of different people. All in all, it would be great to see where this group is headed in the future, and I am excited to be a part of it!
