Montrose Beach Potluck and Volleyball

Montrose Ave Beach (map)

Selected By: Vadim

Let's continue last year's summer tradition of monthly monthly potlucks + volleyball, frisbee and other fun activities.

LOCATION:

  • Montrose Beach on Lake Michigan. We will meet at the same place we met last year: a grass area south of the boathouse [which is located on the east side N. Simmons Drive, between Wilson and Montrose.
  • Map to exact location: http://files.meetup.c...
  • Look for the "ChicagoVeg" sign.
  • Mike will be wearing a a white "Doo Rag" with black trim.

TIMING:

  • 11 AM - Volleyball starts. Don't worry if you are "not good"- we play just for fun. If you have difficulties to find our volleyball court please check with picnic organizers or other members at the picnic.
  • 12PM / Noon - We will start our potluck (If you will not arrive til then, that is fine, but let us know when RSVP) There is no guaranty that we will not start sampling before!
  • 1PM - Optional: More volleyball, frisbee, etc...

TRANSPORTATION:

  • Driving: There is alot of parking Montrose Beach, however some of the closer parking may fill up quickly, which is one of the reasons to arrive ontime :)
  • Public transportation: Several CTA buses stop at Montrose Beach, although there may be a bit of a walk to the picnic (<1mile). http://tripsweb.rtach...
  • Bike: Riding your bike is a good option. Remember, you can usually bring bikes on Chicagoland public transportation.

WHAT WE WILL SUPPLY:

  • Volleyball, net, frisbee
  • A couple of large plastic tarps
  • Some drinking water, ice, some extra paper plates, plastic cups, plastic "silverware", paper towels
  • Some PRIZES!

WHAT TO BRING:

  • A beverage to drink/dish to share - Please follow our potluck rules (http://www.chicagoveg...)
  • Although we will supply them, we encourage you to bring your own plates/bowl/utensils/drinking cup (to be more eco-friendly)
  • The expectation to have a great time!

Feel free to come either for potluck or volleyball or both. Please check what other people will bring and specify what dish you plan to bring as you RSVP so all of us won't a bring potato salad!

CONTACT: Please use "Talk about this Meetup" area in the bottom of the event page to offer/ask rides and post any questions or comments. For the last minute issues (i.e. you can not find us) you can try to call Mike at [masked].

NOTE: This is outside event and subject to weather conditions. We will post any changes to our website and will send an email but if you are not clear if the event is "on", contact Mike.

Awesome Seth. Do you know how much rice you can bring? I'll be bringing around a gallon of curry. It will go with twice that much in volume of rice. Not pressuring you to bring that much, just that if you know how much you can bring, maybe somebody else can supplement the rest.

Thank you all for coming yesterday. I counted nearly 40 people, which is amazing considering it was cloudy and a touch cold! The food was incredible, people were friendly, and we actually had two volleyball nets up -- with both playing 6 x 6 games, for ! (.. in addition to some frisbee, and talking chatting). ... and we ended just before the rain started.

    Pictures to be posted soon.

Look for similar events in July, August, and September! Hope to see you all there!

I think the knife might be mine, diamond and ruby-studded handle... I wish! Actually, it's a serrated small knife with a wooden handle. Is that description accurate enough?

It was nice to see all familiar faces from the last year picnics and a bunch of new people! Thank you for being brave and coming in spite of rain warnings! It seems like Mike had a good agreement with Weather God so rain started exactly when it was time for him to leave :)

A hearty thanks to Mike for such a stellar job organizing this event! Rick and I had a wonderful time playing sand v-ball with you all and meeting everyone. It was well worth how unbelievably sore we both are today :) and of course it goes without saying - the dishes were fabulous! See you all next month! Julie
